U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer Sparks Dialogue on Careers in Justice with Students at Thurgood Marshall Academy

Initiating an on-going effort to inspire students to enter rewarding careers in justice, United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer will be the guest of honor at a dialogue with Thurgood Marshall Academy students on Thursday, February 16, 2006. The topics to be discussed will include Justice Breyer’s current role on the nation’s highest court, the path that led him to his position, and a look at a variety of law-related professional opportunities for our students.

“We are honored to host Justice Breyer and illustrate how educators and legal professionals can unite to prepare students for success in college and civic life,” commented Co-Founder and President of Thurgood Marshall Academy Joshua Kern.

Justice Breyer will engage with Thurgood Marshall Academy students in a face-to-face dialogue, moderated by Fred Graham, Court TV’s Senior Anchor. The event will be chronicled by Court TV and aired in coming months as part of the network’s education programming.

The event is being held in association with Court TV’s education initiative, Careers in Justice, which aims to inspire teens to pursue careers in the fields of justice and law enforcement by illustrating the watershed social and judicial issues that have transformed society.

2006 Job Shadow Day: A Huge Success!

On February 2, 2006 over 120 Thurgood Marshall Academy students experienced the world of work firsthand by participating in Job Shadow Day. The day was a huge success, with students being placed in a number of exciting and diverse professional settings, including:

* The Washington Hospital Center, where a student witnessed a heart transplant in the operating room;

* U.S. Senator Mark Pryor’s office, where a student received a tour of the Capitol and was permitted to sit in on a committee session; and

* The Four Seasons Hotel in Tyson’s Corner, where two students spent the day learning from the hotel’s head chef.

Some of our students were even offered summer positions! We are grateful to our many partners and supporters who made this unique learning experience possible for Thurgood Marshall Academy students.

Two Students to be Published in GirlChild Press Project Anthology

This spring, eleventh-grade Thurgood Marshall Academy students Brittany Ball and Elisabeth Robinson will be published in Growing Up Girl: An Anthology of Voices from Marginalized Spaces. The anthology, which is part of The GirlChild Press Project, will feature a collection of poems, essays, and short stories from girls and women and is intended to give a voice to underrepresented young women.

“I feel my work focuses on important topics that everyday girls go through,” said Brittany Ball. “What I would like the world to learn through my writing is that girls who grow up in poverty are just as determined to succeed in life as anyone else.” Both students see poetry as a powerful outlet for creative expression. “Thoughts swim about in my head, and when they get too tremendous, I just have to write them down,” said Elizabeth Robinson. The entire Thurgood Marshall Academy community is very proud of Brittany and Elizabeth’s accomplishment.
