Construction Bulletin
The
Nichols Avenue School building—constructed
more than 100 years ago—will be the site of
Thurgood Marshall Academy’s permanent home.
Located across from the Anacostia Metro Station,
at the gateway to Historic Anacostia, this
landmark building is being restored and renovated
to become a state-of-the-art school facility
for youth east of the river.
With
close to 60,000 square feet, the facility
will contain science labs, art and music rooms,
a technology lab, a moot courtroom, a 10,000-volume
resources, and spacious classrooms. In partnership
with city agencies, TMA will also construct
a gymnasium for joint use with Savoy Elementary
and the community.
We
are on track to move into the facility in
August 2005.
Recent
progress has included:
Demolition
of outmoded elements to make way for remodeling
Replacing
existing brick load-bearing walls with steel
beams
Digging
50 tons of dirt out of the basement to lower
a floor and make space for the new cafeteria/multi-purpose
room
Laying
the foundation and framing steel supports
for a new addition that will increase the
size of the building by a third
