Washington
Post recognizes
Thurgood Marshall Academy among 30 great high
schools!
Thurgood
Marshall Academy is proud to be one of only
two District of Columbia public high schools
and the only charter high school to be identified
as “exceptional” by parents, teachers, principals,
students, educators, and community leaders in
the Washington Post’s “Back Fence Survey.”
Last
September, Jay Mathews—Senior Education Reporter
at the Washington Post—asked readers
which local high schools had impressed them
and why. More than 300 people responded
to this “Back Fence Survey,” nominating high
schools and explaining what makes them praiseworthy.
In addition to the Back Fence responses, Mr.
Mathews talked to education experts, visited
schools, and examined data. Then he compiled
a list of 30 exceptional public and private
“high schools that work” from across the DC
metropolitan region. The list appeared as the
cover story of the April 3 Washington Post
Magazine, entitled “30 Great High Schools.”
Mr.
Mathews aptly summarizes the qualities that
make Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter
High School exceptional:
The
charter school was founded by several attorneys
and law professors who have tapped into the
area’s considerable legal talent. The
school focuses on law and politics, and invests
a great deal of time in preparing low-income
students for college. It uses a longer
day, a longer week and a longer year, along
with intensive after school tutoring.
There is an emphasis on critical thinking
and public speaking.
