Location

We're located at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Howard Road in Southeast DC, directly across from the Anacostia Metro Station on the Green Line.

Driving Directions

Thurgood Marshall Academy is located in the southeastern quadrant of Washington D.C.

The following are directions from downtown Washington, DC:

  • From either New York Avenue or Massachusetts Avenue, take I-395 South.
  • Follow signs for I-295 South.
  • When you cross the Anacostia River, you'll see signs that say Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and I-295 South to Richmond. Stay on I-295 toward Richmond.
  • Take Exit 3B—Howard Road.
  • Turn left onto Howard Road.
  • Pass the Anacostia Metro station.
  • Turn left onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue—Thurgood Marshall Academy is the first building on your left.

How much is the tuition for a student to attend?

Thurgood Marshall Academy does not cost any money. We are a public school.

Admissions criteria and process

Thurgood Marshall Academy admits students to the 9th and 10th grades on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must fill out an application form, and students and parents must attend an interview with admissions staff. Click here for more information.

Do students wear uniforms?

Virtually all professions have either explicit or implicit standards of dress, and Thurgood Marshall Academy is no exception. The school uniform, which can be purchased through the school, consists of a burgundy or white Thurgood Marshall Academy polo shirt and khaki pants or skirt.

We also ask students to wear professional dress for activities such as Law Day and portfolio presentations.

How long is the school day and school year?

Students attend classes from 8:45am to 3:30pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 8:45am to 4:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We also have frequent Saturday activities for students.

What is a charter school?

The DC Public Charter School Board describes charter schools as "independently-operated public schools that are open to all District residents, regardless of their neighborhood, socioeconomic status, academic achievement, or ethnicity. There are no admission tests or tuition fees. Parents and students choose to attend a particular charter school because its unique focus, curriculum, structure, size, environment and other features meets the needs of those students."
