Volunteer
Thurgood Marshall Academy relies on a cadre of organizations and individuals for its out-of-school programming. Over 30 organizations and 200 individuals volunteer their time each year for the following programs:
Homework Help operates Monday through Friday throughout the school year, matching students with tutors to provide one-on-one support. Tutoring is in the library 3:30 to 6pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; 4 to 6pm on Tuesday; and 3:30 to 5pm on Friday. Tutors are needed in all subjects, including English, history, law, math, science, and Spanish.

Law Day brings 9th-grade students to law firms each month to participate in workshops on the American legal system. Students conduct mock trials, engage in roundtable discussions, and explore interactive case studies. Thurgood Marshall Academy provides curriculum and training for law firms that volunteer to host law day activities.
Law Firm Tutoring brings 11th and 12th graders to law firms each week to work individually with attorneys and paralegals who provide academic support and mentoring in their offices. Students develop positive relationships with role models, sharpen their academic and professional skills, and reinforce their college aspirations.
Job Shadow Day matches students with professionals working in a variety of careers so students can visit and learn about a prospective work environment. Job Shadow Day hosts demonstrate the importance of professionalism, teach students about new careers, and share with students the academic steps and skills necessary to become successful in their field of choice.
Brown Bag Lunch and Speaker Series introduces students to various facets of law. Over lunch, small groups of attorneys meet with students to discuss their experiences in the legal field. Brown Bag lunches provide an opportunity for students to learn more about how one becomes a lawyer and what a lawyer does on a day-to-day basis. Brown Bag lunches are a great way for new community partners to meet our students, tour our building, and learn more Thurgood Marshall Academy’s law-related programs.
If you or your firm are interested in learning more about any of these programs, if you have other ideas to help our students succeed, or if you would like to donate to Thurgood Marshall Academy, please contact Jessica Sher, Director of Development & Partnerships, at 202-563-6862 ext. 149 or jsher@tmapchs.org.
Mentoring
Do you want to give back to your community but have very little time to do so? For just five hours each month, mentoring is an incredible way to support local high school students in your community. Our mentor program pairs a student with an adult professional who can offer support, advice, and guidance during a student’s final years of high school and the critical post-secondary planning process.
Mentoring can improve a student’s attitude towards school, enhance his/her confidence, and afford the invaluable opportunity to interact with a positive role model.
One Saturday morning a month, Thurgood Marshall Academy mentors and students gather to participate in a variety of fun and enriching activities. Past Mentor Day events have included:
- College campus visits
- Group community service projects
- Bowling
- Georgetown basketball games
- Museum scavenger hunts
- IMAX movies
Mentor one child, change two lives.
Thank you for your interest in the Mentor Program. The application period for this year is now closed. For more information about all volunteer opportunities, please contact Zoe Fried, Assistant Director of Programs, at (202) 563-6862 ×183.
