Shining Star Gala
Thank you to all of the supporters from this year’s Shining Star Gala! We deeply appreciate all you do for our students.
The Annual Shining Star Gala is an opportunity for us to celebrate the people who make a difference in the lives of students in Ward 8, the most underserved community in Washington, DC. It is also an opportunity to close the roughly $4,000 per-student gap between the cost of providing an excellent education and our public funding.
We offer the following four opportunities, in addition to attending, to support Thurgood Marshall Academy through the Shining Star Gala.

Auction Information
The Annual Shining Star Gala features a silent auction during the cocktail reception. Do you have or know of something that would make a good auction item? Contact Jess Joswick at (202) 563-6862 × 105. You may also download our Auction Donation Form and mail or fax it to the school.
We are particularly interested in the following items:
- Stays at 4- and 5-star Washington, DC hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons, and the Hotel Monaco
- Resort and ski getaways
- DC area pro-sporting tickets (i.e., Redskins, Wizards, Capitals)
- Dinner at trendy DC restaurants such as Citronelle, the Oval Room, and Zaytinya
- Hard-to-get concert tickets
- Golf and recreation outings
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are crucial to our successful event, and we are excited to involve interested people. We will ask volunteers to dress in formal clothing and attend one short training.
The day of the gala, we need volunteers for the following:
- Setting up the space
- Greeting attendees
- Registering attendees
- Monitoring the silent auction
- Working with students
